SIMPSON DNA RESULTS

This website outlines lineages for those Simpson researchers who match the Simpson DNA R2 haplotype. The R2 DNA has been traced back to Central Asia about 25,000 years ago. People carrying this unique DNA signature settled primarily on the Indian subcontinent and to a lesser degree in Iran, Anatolia and the Caucasus per a paper on the ethnoancestry website (the paper is in a pdf format and is slow to load). This DNA signature is infrequently found outside the Indian subcontinent and hasn't been as thoroughly studied as other haplotypes.

These notes about our R2 haplotype were provided by John Simpson of the UK:

"The R2 modal values for 1-12 are shown below. These are taken from a paper on R2 on the ethnoancestry website (from a pdf file that can be slow to load):

393 390 19 391 385a 385b 426 388 439 389-1 392 389-2
14 23 14 10 13 20 12 12 11 14 10 29

John Simpson also explained, "A paper on Wikipedia says that indicators of R2 are values of 10 at 391, 10 at 392 and 12 at 426. Interestingly, I think all the Simpson R2 matches have this, but I was given details of some tested R2s on the Parkin/Perkin project website and they did not exactly match these indicators.

"I understand that the definitive marker for R2 is genetic marker M124 and I was all set to have FtDNA test me for this, but they said it wasn't necessary as I had two matches from people who had been tested R2."

Note: Patrick and Michael share a common ancestor in William who was born 1721. Fast mutating alleles might be used to distinguish various lines from one another. Michael and Patrick have an exact DNA match suggesting that we now have a unique signature for branches descending from William Simpson born 1721.
