pg 7 Harmon CUMMINS History

Harmon CUMMINS Sr. said he knew but little of his family connection as his father died when he was small. He said his mother was Irish and raised 3 children, Harmon, John, and Milla CUMMINS. They lived on the eastern shore of Mariland. He worked on the farm till 1775 when he maried Mary JAMES. He being about 32 old, she about 20 years old. In the first part of that year him and a friend concluded to inlist for 3 years, one was to serve 1½ years and then the othr the balance of the time. The one at home was to take care of the women and children. Grandmother had her first child, 3 months old so arnagements being made, then cast lots who should go first and the lot fell on Grand Father and he started and his brother John and in the course of the 1½ years his friend died he left at home and he served out the 3 years of the war never hearing from home but 2 times he was in 7 seven of the hottest battles fought by WASHINGTON as he was imediatly under his command. He was in the same command that had to march 15 miles on the night 25th December 1776 over ice and in a severe snow storm all the way from the camp to the Deleware River where TRENTON stood and taken that post and 1000 hessian soldiers prisinor.

pg 8

In 1838 I stayed all night with GrandFather and GrandMother CUMMINS and I asked him the particklers of that nights march and he said when the orders came to march that a great many of the soldiers was barefoot and the orders was to tear up their blankets and wrap their feet in them, but the calvery went ahead and cut up the ice so it cut the blankets off their feet and also cut their feet. Then he said it looked like you had cut a beefs throat and dragged it on the snow and when they had taken the city and prisoners, the soldiers could scarcely be restrained from fighting for they were in so much pain, not one out of 20 was able to do duty next day nor for many days, some of them for many days after. But this was not as hard a fate as he had to endure the next winter for he was taken prisnor at the Battle of Valley Forge, him and about 1300 others and put in jail in Philadelphia and they there had like all to of perished with hnger and cold. It is recorded in history as the cold winter of 1777. Out of 1300, there was about 450 or 500 came out when eschanged. The manner in which they were fed was once in 2 days. The jailor would come with kind of slopmade from slain horses and boiled up without salt and had troughs around the jail and pour the stuff in there and then call like he was calling hogs from the woods.

pg 9

One poor fellow was alittle forward and he reached his hand to take out a bone and the jailor struck him with the key he had in his hand and killed him and the key bounced out of the jailors hand and struck grandfather on the leg making a scar that he that he carried to the grave, tho the lord blest him with long life living to 107 years old raised a family of 9 children, 5 sons and 4 daughters. Three of his sons weigh over 200 lbs. apiece the other about 180 lbs. the other about 165 the daughter 160, as they were common plain farmers.

I will here digress a little in the spring of ' 76 late as I before stated grandmother was left in care of a friend, and that friends wife had a little girl child about one year old and one pleasant morning in May the child was at play in the yard and would come often to the door and try to tell something so the women went to see what passed the child ran before round the house and gathered up the head of a large rattlesnake and attempted to drag it along to them. When the mother saw its danger, she snatched the child away and the snake fell to the ground and in aniston it was in couled ready for fight. Thus you see how merciful the Lord was to that child. This ends the snake story.

295. Ibid., p. 129 Reuben kept the records for the Baptist church and apparently recorded his own baptism in Sept. 1773. Others who were baptized were: Agnes Sherrill, ___ Freeman, Sarah Freeman.

297. June Baldwin Bork, Wayne County, Kentucky Civil Court Records (n.p.: 1974, n.d.), p. 198 William Simpson, administrator of the estate of Reuben Simpson deceased complaining of Avington Simpson, July Term 1835. William states that on 13 April 1819 wrote the following note with his hand, "I promise to pay or cause to be paid unto Reuben Simpson on his order, the just and full sum of $115 to be paid 5 years after date to be discharged in good State Bank Notes, it being for value received as witness my hand and seal this 13 April 1819." Signed by Avington Simpson, witnessed by Samuel Simpson. On the back of the note, "The within note is entitled to a credit of $50 paid Samuel Rector towards keeping the old Gentleman, R. Simpson about 5 years - 31 Dec. 1838. Signed: Samuel Rector.

Now William Simpson further states that Avington Simpson has not kept his agreement as above and has altogether failed, refused and neglected to pay to Reuben during his life the sum of $115.

June Baldwin Bork, Wayne County, Kentucky Deeds (n.p.: Apple Valley, CA: privately published, 1993, n.d.), Book F, page 242 In a transfer between George Dowell and Reuben Payne on Otter Creek and Beaver Creek Reuben Simpson Sr's line was mentioned. If he'd been deceased at this time a notation should have been made. The date of this record was Oct. 28, 1833, recorded 2 Dec. 1833.
299. June Baldwin Bork, Wayne County, Kentucky Civil, page 198-199 In a lawsuit between William Simpson, administrator of Reubin's estate and Avington Simpson, the following statement was made 29 November 1838 in Monticello by James Poe who'd taken care of Reubin and Sarah in their last years, "I went with Reuben and his wife to James Grindle's. I was 16 years old at that time. They lived in a house to themselves until the old lady Simpson died, which according to my best impression was not exceeding 12 months and probably not more than 6 of that. Old lady Simpson took to her bed sick and died 5 or 6 days later. James Grindle and his wife insisted that Reuben Simpson and his wife come to stay with them to be company for Mrs. Grindle, as her husband was away so much of the time. I took care of them as far aw was in my power and had a younger brother that lived with Grindle that aided me, but I generally did the business of both families. I cultivated 10 acres in corn for Reuben the first 2 years that we were there. Reuben rented the cultivator to be paid out of the crop. He kept his stock separate and sold them about 12 months after the 2nd crop was gathered. The old lady did her own cooking until she was taken down sick and died and they were of little or no trouble to anyone. The proceeds from the corn and from him teaching school went for their support. James Grindle got a large black man from Reuben and did not pay anything for him, and I can safely say he was worth about $40. Grindle was amply paid for any attention that he gave to the old people. For the services that I did for the Grindles, I did not charge anything and neither did they pay me anything. The old man Simpson paid me by giving me a young horse and saddle for my services, and he clothed me and gave me my edeucation also for my services to them. Signed: James M. Poe.

Note: Received of Avington Simpson $54 in full of the demand which I was authorized to collect for Harvey Poe one of the heirs of Sarah Poe deceased, it being the amount of Henry Poe's legacy in the estate of said Sarah Poe which Reuben Simpson Sr. was bound to pay this 24 Sept. 1832. James Poe, attorney in fact for Harvey Poe.
300. Clarissa Ruth Barnes Smart, Wayne County, Kentucky Related, p. 128 Reuben Simpson entered 640 acres on the Beaver Dam Branch which is probably a branch of the Catawba River.
301. Reuben's household consisted of 2 males over 16, 4 under 16 and 6 females. Sons William and Joshua were both over the age of 16 so one of the them was probably the the other male over 16 but one of those two was probably missing. I believe that the William Simpson on the 1790 census was Reuben's father.

From Kilgore research we know that Winnie Clayton Kilgore appears to have lived in Greene Co TN sometime between 1784 and 1790 when Charles Kilgore appears on census records of Pendleton Dist SC. In his pension request, he also noted that he had lived in Greene Co TN, I think this makes it likely that Reuben was there if briefly.
